Healthy Habits for Hostel Living; Nutrition and Wellness Tips

So you are a hosteller right? Hostel life, each day, unfolds its unique chapters blended with new experiences and challenges. One among them is retaining healthy food habits. Many students face hurdles adapting to hostel food and hence, drop out. This can be addressed by following healthy eating habits. Go through the blog below for wellness tips!

Balanced Diet in the menu please?

When hostel food enters the scene, there are limited options which are healthy as well as delectable. To stay on top of your well-being, start by prioritizing balanced meals. Add supplements rich in carbs, protein, vitamins, etc. There are seven essentials for a balanced diet –

·        Carbohydrates

·        Protein

·        Fat

·        Fibre

·        Vitamins

·        Minerals

·        Water

Note –

 1. A balanced diet should contain,

·        40% - Fruits and Vegetables (that  must be rotating on daily basis)

·        25% - Protein (Lentils, beans, tofu, quinoa, peanut butter, etc)

·        25% - Fibre-rich carbohydrates (Oat, barley, brown rice, figs, legumes, berries, etc)

·        10% - Fats (Nuts and nut butter, dark chocolate, coconut oil, etc)

2. Average Calorie Intake, an average male should consume 2500 calories per day whereas an average female should consume 2000 calories per day.

Eat right, follow a diet based on scientific research, stay healthy and study moreee.  

Stock up Health-friendly ‘Dabbas’

Isn’t it amazing to have movie nights on weekends? It becomes more fun when potato chips, popcorns, noodles, and cold drinks are added. But you know how gut-friendly those are? Cut them out asap!

Replace those with snacks having nutritional value and long shelf-life. Munch upon -

·        Makhanas

·        Masala oats

·        Unpackaged fruit juices

·        Nuts

·        Seeds, etc to avoid temptation of junk food. Fine example of ‘Small Habits, Big Change’

Stay H2O charged

Easy to crack right? Exactly! Easy to follow as well. Stay hydrated throughout the day and reduce excessive sugary drinks.

Subsume physical activities

Circle that half an hour you waste on your screen and move your body. Exercise, dance, anything! Get some physical work done. Morning runs, outdoor games in evenings, work best.

Stress Management

Students these days experience intense stress due to academic pressure, thus negatively affecting on their mental health, studies, schedule, and relationships with others. Practice mindfulness, get atleast 7-8 hours of sleep, read self-help books, and talk to close friends and family. Sharing really helps.

Balance between Mental and Physical Health

Mental health and physical health are equally important. Make sure you care for your mini brain as much as you do it for your physical health.
