P.G. or Flat, Which one is better? A Complete Guide
While moving to a new city, there are various questions juggling in mind. Which location to choose? Which type of accommodation to look for? Is paying guest accommodation better than a flat? Or flat has more benefits with it compared to paying guest accommodation? Let’s try to address these questions by comprehensively comparing these two accommodation types.

BASIS AND COMPARISON
1.
INDIVIDUAL
PREFERENCES – Different individuals prefer different occupancy types. Some
prefer single occupancy while others prefer double or multiple occupancy.
In paying guest accommodation, there are various rooms which ultimately suggests that you get to live with many people. More interaction, more exposure.
In flats, there are fewer people, possibly your friends or family members, bringing you a sense of connection.
Thus, based on that, decide whether you want to enjoy your solitude or you want to develop connections.
2.
FACILITIES
– There are distinctions in the facilities provided at a paying guest
accommodation and a flat.
· Rooms at a paying guest are basic, all having almost similar facilities while rooms at flat are different. Some are well-furnished while others are semi-furnished.
· Food, a very common reason why individuals move out of a paying guest (not applicable to all paying guests certainly).
In most paying guests, there is a fixed menu. No headaches of buying groceries and managing the whole kitchen. Prefer paying guest if you are time-bounded.
In flats, you can enjoy your home-cooked delicious meals or you may subscribe to any tiffin service center. The only confusion here is what to cook next.. ;)
· Housekeeping in a paying guest generally involves daily cleaning, laundry services, regular maintenance, etc. while in a flat, you need to do all of that by yourself.
3.
BUDGET
– Budget of a paying guest is quite different from that of a flat, although
not much. If you’re staying in an independent flat, it depends on the number of
people you’re staying with because all of the total expense gets divided. So,
it may/may not be equal to the budget of a P.G. In most cases, staying in a
flat is lot more facilitative but a bit costlier than a P.G.
4.
RULES
AND LIBERTY – Quite clear that you need to follow rules and regulations in
a P.G. while staying in a flat allows you to do things with less boundations.
5.
SECURITY
DEPOSIT – Security deposit is the amount a property owner collects from a
tenant when renting out his/her property.
You need to pay the security if you stay in a flat. By the time, your rent agreement’s validity expires, and you do not continue your stay, you get that amount back. On the other side, very few P.G. owners demand the security deposit.
PAYING GUEST ACCOMMODATION; PROS AND CONS
1. Pros –
· Security.
· Strict rules and regulations that ensure discipline.
· Food on time.
· Regular cleaning and maintenance.
· Community sphere.
2. Cons –
·
Less freedom.
·
Rules & boundations.
· One may/may not have to compromise on food.
INDEPENDENT FLAT; PROS AND CONS
1. Pros
–
·
Freedom.
·
Food according to your preference.
·
Less boundations.
·
Better facilities
·
Shared space and budget.
2. Cons –
·
Sometimes, flat owners deny the security deposit
to the tenant. Make sure to get complete rent agreement before shifting.
·
Your safety and security is something to be very
thoughtful of. Keep the doors and windows locked.
·
Might get a bit expensive.
